The Considerate Investor?

My name is Simon Savill. Welcome to my website.

I chose the name of the site with a definite nod to both meanings of considerate. I have always tried to have a considered approach to investing, attempting to sift the reality from the story and having the patience to stick with really good businesses through short term volatility.

The other side of considerate is that of being mindful not to cause harm to others. I consider others to include individuals, groups, habitats and species. The damage caused to the natural world and the climate over the last hundred years has been nothing short of staggering. Whether measured by habitat loss, species abundance, or global emissions, the impacts have been enormous. The only thing that has been more incredible, given the weight of evidence and the time for which we have understood it, has been the lack of willingness by govenments to do anything significant about it.

The mood music has certainly started to change. Indeed it is difficult to examine almost any government or corporate communication without coming across an environmental policy. This is where the other side of considerate needs to come in, to patiently unpick the marketing from the reality. Nowhere is this more difficult than the financial services industry. There have been a lot of products launched (or rebranded) and even for someone familiar with the jargon, it can be difficult to determine what is really being sold. I have a background in fund management (listed European smaller companies in case you were interested) and one of my main motivations for starting this site was to provide some independent perspective on what the jargon means and how that translates into real world action.

I would also like to draw attention to companies, people or technologies which are having a genuine impact on making the world a better place, even if only by a little. My career has been in investment, but I studied Biology at university. I have always had a fascination for the natural world, with all of its amazing diversity and I am certain that we have a tremendous amount to learn if we can just stop destroying it.

This site is, and always will be a work in progress, learning as we go, so if you have any comments or suggestions that you would like to make, or if you just want to say hello, then please do send me a message at: theconsiderateinvestor@fastmail.com>

Thank you for your time here.

Simon
